Our Curriculum Overview
RGSG Muscat offers an enhanced and modified version of the English National Curriculum, with an international character. We do this through the framework of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). This is an international curriculum approved by the Ministry of Education. The IPC has been specially adapted by our curriculum experts to suit the cultural, geographical and social context in the Sultanate of Oman. As the students progress through the school, we will also offer international qualifications recognised by British institutions and approved by the Ministry of Education in the Sultanate of Oman.
International Primary Curriculum (IPC)
The IPC is a comprehensive, thematic and creative curriculum that is designed to help students develop knowledge, skills, and understanding across a broad range of subjects. It is designed to help children develop a wide range of skills and knowledge and understandings, including research and investigation skills, language and communication skills, and social and organisational skills. Through the IPC, children are encouraged to explore their own interests, collaborate with others, and learn about the world around them.
The IPC offers many benefits for students, including a stimulating and engaging learning environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. It also helps children develop a broad range of skills and knowledge that will be useful throughout their lives, such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and global awareness. It is used in over 1000 schools in 90 countries all over the world. The IPC is fully recognised and approved by the Ministry of Education of Oman.
Primary School
In the primary school, we offer the International Primary Curriculum, adapted to meet British, International and Omani curriculum standards, according to the educational stages shown below.
Foundation Stage for Early Years (age 3 years 2 months to 5 years 11 months).
Children in the Early Years love coming to school, looking forward to having fun, learning and making friends. We provide a safe and welcoming environment, where every child develops confidence and independence.
Our highly trained Early Years staff use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) as the basis for their planning and assessment. Teaching assistants provide support in every classroom, and specialist teachers deliver music, languages, technology and physical education programmes.
Grades 1 to 6 (age from 5 years 2 months to 13 years 2 months)
Key Stage 1 – For Grade 1 and 2
In Key Stage 1, we go beyond the acquisition of knowledge to develop the skills of investigation and inquiry, as well as taking a more structured approach to learning.
The curriculum is structured around thematic units of learning, that bring together a wide range of subjects, including language and literature (English, Arabic, third language), numeracy & mathematics, science, humanities (history, geography, trade, business), technology (computing, robotics, makerspace, coding), the arts (music, art & design, drama, dance), physical education & health. Each theme/unit is designed to be engaging and challenging for children and is supported by a wide range of resources and activities.
Specialist teachers deliver Arabic, Islamic Studies, technology, music and PE.
Key Stage 2 – For Grade 3 to 6 In Key Stage 2, our students will build on the strong foundations already developed in Early Years and Key Stage 1. We focus on the development of independent learning and self-management skills. Our Key Stage 2 students will use a range of specialist facilities to develop higher levels of skills, knowledge and understandings. Students learn how to become digital and global citizens and develop key communication and collaborative skills.
Secondary School
In the secondary school, we offer international programmes recognised by awarding institutions for British international educational programmes accredited in the Sultanate of Oman.
Key Stage 3 – Grades 7 to 8 (age from 11 years 2 months to 15 years and two months).
Key Stage 4 – For Grades 9 to 10 (from the age of 13 years 2 months to 17 years 2 months) We offer the Cambridge and Pearson-Edexcel International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) at the end of Grade 10.
Key Stage 5 – For Grades 11-12 (from the age of 15 years 2 months to 24 years) We offer Cambridge and Pearson-Edexcel International AS and Advanced Levels (A-Levels) at the end of Years 11 and 12 respectively.
Our Learning and Teaching Model
Our Learning and Teaching Model nurtures personalised learning pathways for each student that foster collaboration and independent learning, and equips them with the skills, knowledge and understandings to achieve their aspirations and dreams, and succeed in a digital and global society.
The learning model has six interconnected dimensions that impact on learning and teaching. They are underpinned by a central overarching idea – a focus on inspiring student and staff creativity, learning and achievement. We ensure learning happens across a diverse network of people, in school, on-line, and beyond the classroom. Cutting-edge technology permeates the entire learning and teaching model and supports holistic and independent learning.
Understanding and supporting our students
We observe student behaviour, both within the classroom and elsewhere, to build caring, strong and personalised learning relationships with our students. By understanding our students, we can better support them. We also recognise that learning and achievement are enhanced by forming partnerships with parents.
Strategies for learning and teaching
We account for different needs and ways of learning to develop purposeful lessons that are inspiring and engaging. We use diverse approaches including inquiry-based, project-based, play-based, concept-based and experiential learning.
Evidence for learning
We have is an innovative approach to assessment that positively impacts student learning and achievement, enabling:
- Teachers and students to identify where students are in their growth and development by gathering authentic evidence of learning.
- Students and teachers to make decisions about the next steps for learning and teaching.
- Teachers to adapt learning and teaching methods and expectations.
- Parents to have access to parent-friendly information about their child’s learning.
Agency, co-creation and student-driven learning
We recognise that students should be active and influential participants in their own learning. We nurture student agency that leads to intrinsic motivation, co-creation and, as they progress through school, increasingly student-driven, independent learning pathways.
Professional learning and collaborative planning
Teachers collaborate to develop an inspiring, authentic, and challenging curriculum that links with the real world and accounts for student input. Staff self-driven learning is enabled through professional learning communities and individual professional research that impacts on student learning.
Global citizenship and community action
We frame our learning and teaching model with a sense of purpose, and allow diversity of values, beliefs and cultures to flourish. We make this visible through our global citizenship and community action programme, and our focus on nurturing the UN sustainable development goals in the context of Oman.
